Bishop's Stortford College is a private boarding and day school with approximately 900 pupils. The school offers a wide range of teaching facilities and has recently built a new swimming pool to replace a 15m Victorian pool.
The old pool and jumble of associated changing, toilet, plant rooms and sub-station were located on a prominent road frontage, and desperately needed to be addressed. The brief was to provide a new Lecture Theatre for use by the school and for outside function with a further multi purpose hall and toilet accommodation.
The approach was to retail a simple conversion of the old pool area into a new Glulam roof structure with roof glazing to provide the Lecture Theatre and demolish the associated buildings and replacing them with a building form that matched the adjoining Victorian brick buildings.
The resulting street scope blends with the existing road frontage and is awarded a civic award for its contribution to the local environment.
